Notre-Dame de Paris restored!

  • The restored spire : the emblematic spire designed by Viollet-le-Duc, destroyed in the 2019 fire, has been rebuilt identically. It culminates with a golden rooster and contains sacred relics
  • The eight bells of the north tower, recently installed, offer an impressive spectacle
  • The interior magnificently restored : a new visitor route has been redesigned to admire the walls, the large stained glass rose windows, and the vaults cleaned to regain their Gothic splendour.
  • During your visit, you may be lucky enough to hear the famous organ composed of 8,000 pipes
  • To see the Treasury, you will have to go to the reception desk, where you will discover: The Relics of the Passion, the goldsmith’s work, but also magnificent liturgical books and many other treasures
  • Under the forecourt, the Maison du Chantier offers an immersion behind the scenes of the restoration, the trades and know-how, the technical and human challenges of the project carried out to save the cathedral
  • A virtual tour is also possible thanks to 3D, and it is also under the forecourt – Eternal Notre-Dame: Virtual Experience

What the archaeological excavations have revealed

  • Following the fire, archaeological excavations have shed new light on the history of the cathedral and its decorations from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century
  • In the middle of hundreds of burials, lead sarcophagi have been unearthed and possibly that of the poet Joachim du Bellay buried in 1560
  • Exceptional fragments of sculptures that made up the thirteenth-century rood screen (a gallery that separated the choir from the nave)
  • Currently on display at the Musée de Cluny, we discover the finesse and colour of the sculptures of the rood screen that were previously unknown to everyone
  • Finally, archaeologists have unearthed remains from the Carolingian era and antiquity that are very important for understanding the history of this site in the heart of Paris

Notre-Dame de Paris: the minute of history

  • It is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, emblematic of the early Gothic period
  • Built in the 12th century, Notre-Dame de Paris is one of the most visited monuments in Paris.
  • Located in the heart of the capital, on the Île de la Cité, it is as emblematic as the Eiffel Tower
  • Built over two centuries, Notre-Dame is remarkable for its architecture but also his sculpture. These are important milestones in the history of medieval construction
  • Even if it is not the largest cathedral in France, it is still very imposing with: 130 m long and 48 m wide! It reaches 96 m in height at the level of the spire
  • Since 1806, the “relics of the Passion” brought back from Jerusalem by St. Louis have been kept in the “Treasury” of the cathedral
  • The cathedral was also destroyed during the French Revolution, but the sculptures that were saved are fortunately visible at the Musée de Cluny !
  • The architect Viollet-le-Duc restored to the nineteenth century the famous neo-Gothic style spire that overlooks the building and that we can admire again, as well as the large rose window and numerous sculptures
  • Finally, let us not forget Victor Hugo and his novel Notre-Dame de Paris which, even today, contributes to the fame of Notre-Dame all over the world
