Built at the end of the twelfth century, the Chateau de Vincennes is the only French royal residence dating from the Middle Ages that still retains its original appearance. A visit to the castle allows you to see the castle, the Royal Chapel, the ramparts, the moat and the keep. Nevertheless, it is better to be warned, all the rooms of the castle are empty. Allow about 2 hours for the complete visit.
Visit the Château de Vincennes
A royal residence from the twelfth to the eighteenth century, a visit to the Château de Vincennes allows you to understand daily life in the Middle Ages, as well as the life of the guards and prisoners incarcerated in the keep. We remember the affair of the Duke of Enghien and discover the famous prisoners who “stayed” at the Château de Vincennes.
To visit the Château de Vincennes and its keep, it is better to be in good shape: no less than 250 steps to climb to the top.
It is the tallest fortified tower in Europe and is where Henry V of England died.
Every year, in December, don’t miss the Enchanteurs de Vincennes, a parade and great medieval show that brings together a hundred participants. An ideal outing with children.
The Sainte-Chapelle de Vincennes
Founded in 1379, on the model of the Sainte-chapelle in Paris, the one in Vincennes is nevertheless much more sober. It remains an interesting monument and family visits are organized to discover the Sainte Chapelle (from 5 years old).

Walking in Vincennes
- Vincennes is a very pleasant town whose main shopping street (the rue du midi) is pedestrianised on Saturdays, nice for families with young children
- The esplanade of the town hall has been converted into a vast garden. In winter, an outdoor skating rink is installed there. In summer, water misters can cool children down when it’s a heat wave
- For children from 3 to 12 years old, a few hundred meters from the Château de Vincennes, “Le jardin du couchant” is a play area set up above the RER with about fifteen games such as canes, springs, balance bar, stainless steel gantry, carousel, spring disc
We suggest you in the surrounding area…
- The Parc Floral, a real playground for children (playgrounds, Guignol, tree climbing, etc.)
- The Paris farm. It is free for all, all year round and it is a must-do outing with children in the Bois de Vincennes
- Go rowing at Lake Daumesnil or Lake des Minimes
- Take the kids to the Paris Zoological Park
- Go to the Tropical Aquarium of the Golden Gate
