Suzanne Valadon, or “the need to paint reality”

An exhibition that traces the work of one of the most important artists of her generation

  • In the heart of the lively Les Halles district, the exhibition dedicated to Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938) at the Centre Pompidou is a dive into the art of a pioneering artist, one of the first women to make a name for herself in the world of painting at the beginning of thetwentieth century
  • With more than 200 works on display, the very rich exhibition is made up of little-known paintings and drawings
  • From her beginnings as a model of the Montmartre family, where she posed for Renoir, Puvis de Chavanne, Henner and Toulouse-Lautrec, of whom she was the mistress, we discover the career of an artist who emancipated herself from the artistic currents emerging at the turn of the century
  • Supported by Degas, and with afierce desire to paint reality, Suzanne Valadon places the reality of the nude, both female and male, at the center of her work. This was an exceptional event at that time!
  • The vibrant and colourful exhibition shows all the audacity of a woman artist who continues to inspire current artists

The themes and the route of the exhibition

  • The artistic beginnings: to explore her early works, where she began to
developing his unique style, influenced by the artistic movements of his time

  • The nudes: the central point of the exhibition, the female body through the eye of a woman without complacency or idealization. For the first time, a naked man is painted from the front (but he was soon covered with a fig leaf!)
  • Influence and Legacy: Her Role in the Development of Modern Art and How Her Work Paved the Way for Other Women Artists
  • This exhibition will interest the youngest and teenagers who will find a multitude of colors and scenes to detail
