Picasso and comics

L’expo Picasso et la Bande dessinée : une expo surprenante !

  • We thought we knew everything about Picasso! We knew him for his paintings and cubism in particular, but we discover, at the Picasso Museum, his surprising relationship with comics.
  • “Picasso and the Comic Strip” is the first exhibition dedicated to the links between the work of Pablo Picasso and the world of comics. We learn that Picasso was imbued with the 9th art that he had discovered thanks to his friend Gertrude Stein.
  • Divided into 2 parts, the exhibition shows that Picasso loved comics, that he tried his hand at them and that he considerably influenced comic book artists.
  • The first rooms show the painter’s passion for comics. We discover her weekly readings with her friend and patron Gertrude Stein of Pim Pam Poum by Rudolph Dirks. We also learn that Picasso tried his hand at comics and that he produced at least two real comic strips.
  • The second part of the exhibition presents Picasso’s influence on comics. Its influence is very great and the number of works on display is impressive proof of this. Admiring the plates of Hergé, Gotlib, Geluck, Spiegelman and many others, one appreciates the diversity and impact that Picasso and his creations had on the world.
  • In the end, an exhibition different from the more traditional ones, which should appeal to young audiences. While some may be disappointed by the lack of Picasso paintings presented in this exhibition, they can always visit the museum’s permanent collections after the exhibition.
