Everything you need to know so you don’t break the law!
WHAT THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT LAW PROVIDES
A law should come into force at the start of the 2019 school year to regulate the use of electric scooters in Paris. The growing number of users of electric scooters and other EDPMs (motorized personal mobility devices), the increasing number of accidents, and permanent incivility are forcing the government to take measures. The Act could provide for the following:
THE HIGHWAY CODE FOR ELECTRIC SCOOTERS
- Respect the lights and stop signs
- The maximum speed allowed is 25km/h
- You will need to equip your electric scooter with a horn
- You will need to wear a nice retroreflective vest at night or if visibility is low
- It is forbidden to park them on the sidewalks
SIDEWALKS ARE FOR PEDESTRIANS ONLY
- Electric scooters are forbidden on sidewalks and have been since January 2019
- Obligation to use cycle paths
- If there are no bike lanes, you must use the roads limited to 50 km/h
- If you use the sidewalks, it’s with the engine off and the scooter in your hand
CHILDREN AND ELECTRIC SCOOTERS
- The age requirement to ride an electric scooter is 8 years old
- Children are not allowed to ride an adult’s scooter
- Wearing a helmet is mandatory for children under 12 years old (as for cycling)
IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW THE LAW
- A fine of €135 if you ride on the sidewalks
- A fine of €35 for non-compliance with the law
- A fine of €1500 if the speed exceeds 25km/h
