Nicolas de Staël, a new look

  • It is another very beautiful exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris that retraces in some 200 works, and in a chronological way , the evolution of Nicolas de Staël’s painting between the years 1940 and 1955
  • We discover an art accessible to all levels of reading. Between abstraction and figuration, children from 3 to 6 years old as well as teenagers will find meaning in the painting of this artist who never stuck to the debates on the representation of his time
  • Paintings, drawings, engravings and notebooks from public and private collections in Europe and the United States. Nicolas de Staël’s production actually lasted only 12 years
  • We discover the richness and diversity of perception of a man hungry for plastic discoveries and who, through the travels from which he was inspired, was always in pursuit of new universes
  • Normandy, Provence but also Sicily offered him the possibility of a new light each time different.
  • His use of colour with its shades of grey, purple skies, red seas and strong impasto testify to the experimental nature of his work
  • Experimentation is an important part shown in the exhibition and will make young and old alike want to participate in the great workshops of the Museum of Modern Art

“THE FAMILY CORNER”: the visits-workshops

Family activities

  • Baby visit (0-8 months):
    • From Wednesday 20 September 2023 to Wednesday 10 January 2024 – from 3 pm to 6 pm
    • A gentle visit and a welcome adapted for babies before the walk and their parents to meet the works of Nicolas de Staël. As you walk through the exhibition, yoga and Wutao exercises invite you to relax and unwind. At the end of the visit, sitting on carpets, parents participate in the creation of a souvenir object that they can then take away. Note: baby carrier mandatory
  • Bout à Bout (de 1 à 3 ans)  :
    • From Wednesday, September 20, 2023 to Wednesday, January 10, 2024 from 10:30 am to 11:30 am
    • Some of Nicolas de Staël’s works evoke mosaics, an effect given by coloured fragments. This new vocabulary offers the artist great freedom. The children take hold of coloured and torn papers that may turn into an apple or a bouquet of flowers.
  • Build and Undo (1 to 3 years):
    • From Wednesday 4 October 2023 from 10:30 am to 11:30 am
    • Nicolas de Staël’s creative process involved construction and then a need to undo. This process is just as logical in the creative learning of very young children, who will be able to constantly compose and decompose by means of pieces and a magnetic support.
  • Painting to be done later (from 3 years old)
    • From Sunday from 1 October to Sunday 26 November 2023 from 3.30 pm to 5 pm
    • Nicolas de Staël cut out small elements sketched out of cardboard for paintings to be “done later”. Children and parents are invited to create, in the workshop, patterns that they will keep to paint “later”
  • Travel trips (from 3 years old)
    • From Sunday from October 15, 2023 to Sunday, December 10, 2023 between 3:30 PM and 5 PM
    • Travel occupied a central place in Nicolas de Staël’s creation. Participants in this workshop will find inspiration in the artist’s works to create a landscape that will be personal to them, in the artist’s way

Activities for children

  • The Heart Lab – (4-6 years old)
    • From Wednesday, September 20, 2023 to Saturday, January 13, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    • The exhibition evokes the physical aspect of the painter’s practice and his sensitivity to the world: trees, leaves, colors. In the workshop, the children will use their language to paint a landscape.
  • Nomadic creations (4-6 years old)
    • From Wednesday 27 September to Saturday 20 January from 2.30 pm to 4 pm
    • Travel occupied a central place in Nicolas de Staël’s creation. Participants in this workshop will find inspiration in the artist’s works to create a personal landscape , in the artist’s way
  • Sensitive work (7-10 years old)
    • From Wednesday 27 September to Saturday 20 January from 2 pm to 4 pm
    • Children will experience the artist’s sensitive world in his studio. A real laboratory, like de Staël on his small formats, they will work on the speed of execution allowing them to work on the “sensitive”
  • Fragmented Journeys – Over the Journeys (7-10 years old)
    • From Saturday 30 September 2023 to Saturday 20 January from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm
    • The exhibition particularly highlights the theme of travel and light in the artist’s work. From Normandy to Sicily via Provence, landscapes have influenced his work. For the children, it will be a question of drawing inspiration from these fragments of landscapes to recreate a work

Activities for teens

  • Photo and sound (from 11 to 14 years old)
    • From Tuesday 24 October to Wednesday 25 October 2023 from 13:30-17:30
    • It’s a workshop where young people will take photos without a camera ! In the digital age, they will go to the photo lab to test the techniques of the photogram and cyanotype. A real challenge to build his own universe, a bit like de Staël who defied the quarrels in which he did not take part, between figuration and abstraction.
