An exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay to browse with the family, with children and teenagers to happily rediscover all the shades and themes of these two artists who speak to all generations
Manet and Degas, between complicity and rivalry
- While we thought we knew everything about Edouard Manet (1832-1883), author of the famous “Luncheon on the Grass”, and Edgar Degas (1934-1917), known for his little dancers at the Opera, this very rhythmic exhibition tackles a subject hitherto unknown to the general public: the relationship between the two great Modern painters. As many rapprochements as disagreements…
- The exhibition covers the period 1860-1880. Manet is worldly. Modern, he transgressed artistic conventions and played with the press, while Edgar Degas had a more withdrawn, secretive character, he painted the intimate and remained close to impressionism.
- Opposed on the choice of styles, they debate fiercely, but for all that, they frequent the same intellectual circles, and cabarets, and work with the same dealers and collectors…
- Cabaret scenes and horse races are their favourite themes
- From their deep antagonisms was born a rich and fruitful competing artistic production, which would give birth to Modernity
- What this beautiful Parisian exhibition reveals to us is finally the deep attachment that Manet and Degas had towards each other, so…. Friends or enemies?
The exhibition and museum with children
- A young audience tour in the exhibition is marked by labels specifically written for children to encourage them to stop in front of selected works and to better understand them
- The young audience workshop visits “At a walk, trot, at a gallop” are organised for children aged 6 to 8 and 9 to 12 years old (booking at the museum)
- The “Orsay masterpieces explained to children” tour is fun and takes children into the secret world of Millet, Monet, Seurat, Renoir and many others
Another exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay
- “Pastels. From Millet to Redon” until 2 July 2023
The Musée d’Orsay, one of the most beautiful Impressionist collections in the world
- The Musée de d’Orsay , located in the former Gare d’Orsay, is a very beautiful space. The architecture and scenography of the museum alone justifies its visit!
- It presents painting and sculpture from the mid-nineteenth century to the First World War.
- It is especially the collection of Impressionist paintings that is absolutely extraordinary.
- It is impossible to list all the artists who are exhibited there : Bonnard, Cézanne, Courbet, van Gogh, the Douanier Rousseau, Manet, Monet, Morisot… to name but a few.
- It is now a museum, devoted mainly to French painting between 1860 and 1930
- In our opinion, it is one of the most beautiful painting museums in Paris
