"The Miser: money can't buy happiness!
History: Harpagon is rich, a widower and a father, but above all he's sick with greed. This obsession makes life hell for those around him. Thanks to his savings and his loan-sharking activities, he has built up a treasure which he has hidden at the bottom of the garden. The presence of this treasure drives him mad: what if someone found the cassette and stole it? His illness even led him to want his daughter to marry without a dowry, and to seek a financially advantageous union for himself. Bad luck: his son Cléante has his eye on the same young woman, Marianne. Fortunately, the tricks of some and the intrigues of others lead to an unexpected happy ending.
- L'Avare is staged here as a ferocious comedy, even a comic thriller.
- The play shows how the disease of avarice affects an entire household.
- It also shows the patriarchal system of the time, with an insane yet all-powerful father.
Money, power, love... Too much intrigue!
