“Paris, capital of pearls”
This fascinating exhibition plunges us into the world of luxury and fashion: a forgotten adventure, that of this little pearl…
- The exhibition “Paris, capital of pearls” at the École des Arts Joailliers sheds a fascinating light on the history of pearls
- It explores the central role that Paris has played in the world of luxury, fine jewelry and fashion
- With a hundred pieces on display, the most prestigious lenders include the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Petit Palais, the collections of Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier and Fred, and the exceptional private collection Albion Art
To be discovered in the exhibition route
- We discover that Paris was also the capital of a pearl trade between the Orient and France from the middle of the eighteenthto the middle of thetwentieth century!
- Archival documents and photographs show that the pearl was transported and mounted by the greatest jewellers on Place Vendôme
- During the years 1910 – 1925: it was as symbolic as it was modern, to the point of becoming the object of a real “perlomania”!
- Weaving strong links between these two regions of the world, the exhibition also traces the passion of artists for this precious mother-of-pearl: cinema, fashion, photography as well, opera and poster artists
- The section “The Parisian pearl, from yesterday to today” immerses us in the fascination it continues to exert on designers
The best for children: visits at their height!
- Through the use of hearing, sight and touch, this exhibition uses all the visitor’s senses to discover the immense world of this little pearl
- The video guide provides additional information: tales, legends, and multiple illustrations added to the exhibition space

On the Grands Boulevards, this unusual exhibition is a suspended moment for children who set off to discover a world made of beauty and excellence and a little bit of science…

The Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau in a few words…
It is the eighteenth-century mansion in which the School of Jewelry Arts is located. It owes its name to Florimond-Claude, Count of Mercy-Argenteau, Austrian ambassador to France and close advisor to Marie-Antoinette. This elegant building, typical of neoclassical architecture, was a meeting place for diplomacy and the arts during the Enlightenment. Today, it retains an important heritage and historical interest. So, open your eyes!
