On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of Chaplin’s birth, the Philharmonie presents a very lively, funny and fascinating exhibition on Chaplin’s relationship with music.
The exhibitionexplores the musical dimension of Chaplin’s silent cinema, and the parallel is fascinating because The Tramp was a great music lover.
The many levels of interpretation make this exhibition accessible to all audiences. It’s a real success.
Musical instruments, sheet music, sound effects machines and cameras dialogue with Chaplin’s greatest films. The film excerpts are numerous, often very funny, and music is always omnipresent.
The exhibition demonstrates how much the soundscape is an integral part of Chaplin’s power. He placed the utmost importance on the musical accompaniment of his films and from 1931 onwards, Chaplin exercised complete control over his work, mastering the direction, writing and music of his films.
We discover the music-loving side of the Tramp, through archive images, and posters: photos of the young Chaplin with his violin and cello, annotated scores of his films or film excerpts where the Tramp plays the Violin.
