Ceremony of the great relief of the Republican Guard: a free and original event
- We can once again attend the ceremony of the great relief of the 1st Infantry Regiment of the Republican Guard in front of the Élysée Palace
- For the first time in 27 years, this ceremony is once again visible to the public.
- This old tradition, brought up to date by President Emmanuel Macron, is a way of reaffirming the role of French institutions. She introduces the youngest to the impressive costumes, and in particular the shako, this very specific helmet with cockade and scarlet red plume, but also real swords!
- A little reminder: the Republican Guard is a section of the national gendarmerie which is made up of 3400 people. They ensure the security of the President of the Republic, the institutions and the Assembly
- This ceremony took place every day between 1909 and 1996 at 7:45 a.m
- The great new generation, which you can attend every 1st Tuesday of the month from 9 a.m., is inspired by the ancient ceremonial, with the step in cadence, and to the sound of the bugle
- How does the ceremony take place? Two sections of 16 soldiers parade along Avenue Marigny and Rue de l’Élysée to cross paths along the gate of honour of the Élysée Palace, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré
- After military salutes and exchanges of instructions between the two section chiefs, the new guard replaced the old one for a period of 24 hours
- You will be able to attend this exceptional solemn ceremony free of charge
