“Solo around the world”, the epic of the Vendée Globe skippers

Cast off, let’s set sail at the Musée de la Marine for this great sporting and human challenge on the oceans!

  • Located on the Place du Trocadéro , the Musée National de la Marine with a view to the 12-stage adventure of the most mythical of solo sailing races, without stopovers or assistance
  • More than an exhibition, it is a real immersive experience with 270 pieces on display: outfits worn by the skippers, models, or even books and navigation objects
  • Thanks to interactive installations such as simulators and video recordings, you slip into the shoes of the sailors in situation and relive an extraordinary human and maritime adventure
  • From the Bay of Biscay to the climb up the Atlantic, via the roaring 40s, the howling 50s and the capes of Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn until the finish in the port of Les Sables d’Olonne, in the Vendée!
  • “Solo Around the World” is a vibrant and passionate exhibition that takes us into the history of ocean racing from the pioneers to the creation of the Vendée Globe

This exciting exhibition touches all generations, fromthe youngest to teenagers , who find a multitude of hooks punctuated by playful moments. They will also be able to enjoy, in peace, the breathtaking view of Paris, the Eiffel Tower and the Seine and browse the museum’s collections. Ideal during the February holidays!

The 12 stages of a challenge on the sea: the exhibition route

  • Les Sables-d’Olonne : the start and finish point of the race, the skippers leave the port and set off on an adventure
  • The Bay of Biscay : first event with often difficult weather to test the skippers.
  • The equator and the Doldrums: sudden calm or thunderstorm, vigilance must be constant
  • The Cape of Good Hope: at the southern tip of Africa, the first major cape that marks the entrance to the South Seas
  • Southern seas : sailing conditions are extreme. The famous roaring 40th and howling 50th, strong winds and insane waves
  • Cape Leeuwin : southwest of Australia, it is the 2nd cape, between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific
  • South Pacific : the most isolated area, the challenges are extreme and the loneliness is total…
  • Cape Horn : the last of the great capes known for its formidable storms. It marks the return
  • Sailing up the South Atlantic : a strategic challenge, you have to choose the right winds and keep an eye on your competitors
  • Saint Helena High : a very dreaded moment for its calm… His position in the race is decisive
  • Second passage of the Doldrums : return to an unstable area before the northern hemisphere
  • Arrival in Les Sables-d’Olonne : the joy of returning to port after this extraordinary adventure
