5 Must-See Department Stores in Paris

Paris and its department stores: the Galeries Lafayette, the Printemps Haussmann, the BHV Marais (also called the Bazar de l’Hôtel de Ville), the Samaritaine Paris and finally the Bon Marché Rive Gauche. La Samaritaine Paris (the most luxurious)

  • A little history: La Samaritaine was founded in 1870 by Ernest Cognacq. With its Art Deco and Art Nouveau style, it is listed as a historical monument. La Samaritaine (LVMH group) reopened its doors after years of closure (and years of renovations), in June 2021.

Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche (the most chic)

  • A little history: it was built in 1852 by Pierre Bouciaut. It was called “Au Bon Marché” for 151 years, until 1989. The place was designed by the architect Louis-Charles Boileau and the engineer Gustave Eiffel
  • There are the most prestigious luxury brands, cutting-edge collections, and the clientele is mainly French. Art entered with a collection of 80 pieces (works of art and furniture)

The Galeries Lafayette Haussmann (the most touristy)

  • The Coupole, L’Homme and Maison stores: open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • The Gourmet store: open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • ♡ ♡ Not to be missed: the view of Paris from the 8th floor of Galeries Lafayette. The rooftop offers an exceptional panorama of Parisian monuments: the Opéra Garnier, the Eiffel Tower, the Sacré Coeur Basilica. The sunsets over the rooftops of Paris are superb!
