Enter the Court of Prince Genji… 1000 years of Japanese imagination
It is a very beautiful, fascinating exhibition, where we find all the themes of traditional Japan, which have inspired artists so much.
- In the heart of the fabulous Guimet Museum, the exhibition invites us to dream of the Japan of the imperial court around the influence of a founding novel, “The Said Genji”
- Very quickly, we are immersed in the Heian period (794-1185) and its court art
- It was a unique period of freedom for women in the history of Japan where the arts and literature were favored
- “The Tale of Genji” was born in this context. It is considered one of the most important narratives in Japanese culture.
- Written in theeleventh century by the poet Murasaki Shikibu, it has generated an extremely rich iconography over the past thousand years that has influenced even contemporary mangaka
- The novel tells the life of one of these imperial princes, of extraordinary beauty, poet and charmer of women
- All the novelistic ingredients are present: there is the courtesan, the unrepentant seducer, the fascination of power, the different social classes, money, and even the scorned wife and the jealous husband…
- The exhibition shows us the influence of this novel on creativity: prints, fabrics, kimonos, sculptures, paintings and precious objects, including the lacquer boxes of an illustrious collector … Marie antoinette!
- Gold lacquer, silk, mother-of-pearl and silver inlays… everything is refinement
- To continue, an entire room – undoubtedly the favorite of our teenagers – is devoted to animated films and the presentation of manga that still testify to the artists’ inspiration for this story in the twenty-first century
- The second part focuses on Itarô Yamaguchi (1901-2007), a master weaver from the Nishijin district of Kyoto. We discover the meticulousness of the 4 scrolls that he has woven for 30 years and always on the theme “The said Genji”. A gem on display for the first time
