“Mexica. Gifts and Gods at the Templo Mayor”

Under the cobblestones of Mexico City hide the remains of Tenochtitlan, the heart of a rich and powerful empire: Mexica …

  • Arriving at this new exhibition at the Musée du quai Branly, we set off to meet an entire empire of the pre-Columbian era
  • Thanks to the most recent archaeological discoveries, witnesses of the ancient capital Tenochtitlan and its main temple are being exhibited for the first time in Europe
  • Previously called Aztec, it refers to the Mexica Empire (1325-1521) established in the current basin of Mexico City
  • The Musée du quai Branly exhibits 204 objects and sculptures that the Mexica people deposited in homage to their deities or in exchange for favors requested from the gods
  • We find: quetzalcoalt, the feathered serpent that connects heaven and earth; Tatloc, the god of rain, the eagle or hummingbird, the birds representing the sky; but also the god of the sun and war
  • And of course thegod of death with his pierced head and his locks of hair
  • The frog with a human face is one of the images that will be remembered from this fascinating encounter with the Mexica people
