“At stake! Artists and Sport, 1870 -1930” at the Musée Marmottan
The greatest artists tell us about their time through the fabulous saga of sport
- With more than 160 works on loan from the world’s leading museums and educational activities, the Musée Marmottant celebrates the history of sport and its representations
- With Antoine Bourdelle, Claude Monet, Gustave Courbet, Alfred Sisley, Auguste Rodin or Toulouse-Lautrec, and much more…
- While the society of the time discovered leisure and free time: sport became more democratic
- Until then, it was the wealthiest classes who devoted themselves to sports: water or equestrian sports, fencing matches, or tennis matches.
- But at the turn of this century, a revolution took place! Paris hosted the Olympic Games in 1900 and 1924.
- Thanks to photography, poster art and newspapers, the spirit of sport gradually spread throughout society: cycling, rugby, gymnastics, etc.
- Fascinated by the subject of the aesthetics of the athlete, the artists worked on dynamics, lights, but also the expression of effort and speed
- A brilliant and exciting epic to meet the greatest artists, to be discovered with the family and without limits!
- As part of this exhibition, the museum offers children several creative workshops and visits adapted to different ages
